AND DURING THE SPEECH HE INTRODUCED US TO A VERY UNIQUE BREATHING EXERCISE. AND A WEEK AFTER THE YAC SUMMIT, I WENT TO MY ELEMENTARY BECAUSE I AM A STUDENT INTERN FOR LIKE SUBSTITUTE AND STUFF. AND ONE OF THE STUDENT. IT WAS 8 A.M. BRIGHT AND EARLY IN THE MORNING, SHE CAME UP TO ME AND SHE WAS CRYING AND I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON AND SHE WOULDN'T SPEAK TO ME. THEN I REMEMBER WHAT WAS SAID ABOUT THE BREATHING EXERCISE. SO I TOLD HER, LET'S DO THE BREATHING EXERCISE. AND SHE ACTUALLY LISTENED TO ME. AND AT THE END OF THE EXERCISE, INSTEAD OF CRYING, SHE WAS LAUGHING. SO I WANTED TO SHOW YOU GUYS KIND OF THE EXERCISE THAT HE SHOWED ME. AS EVERYBODY KNOWS, PROBABLY BY NOW, WE BEGAN IN 1967 WITH SOME CHURCH MEMBERS THAT LOOKED AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND CONCLUDED THAT WE NEEDED TO HELP OUR NEIGHBORS, AND FROM THERE THEY STARTED DEVELOPING A COLLECTING FOOD, CLOTHING AND BLANKETS IN THEIR HOMES. AND THEN WE MOVED TO A LITTLE HOUSE, AND THEN WE MOVED TO BLUE BONNET AND STADIUM, AND NOW WE'RE ON NINTH AVENUE NEXT TO THE Y, ACROSS FROM MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL. AND WE ARE NOW PARTNERS WITH ENTERGY, UNITED WAY, MID-SOUTH, JEFFERSON COUNTY, SOUTHEAST TEXAS FOOD BANK. WE HAVE LOTS OF WONDERFUL PARTNERS. I DID PROVIDE SOME HANDOUTS FOR YOU ALL SO YOU CAN KIND OF LOOK AT THE NUMBERS I'M GOING TO REGURGITATE TO YOU.IT'S AMAZING BECAUSE WE BEGAN WITH CHURCHES IN THE 70S. WE HAD 75 CHURCHES THAT WERE ACTIVELY SUPPORTING OUR MISSION TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY WITH SERVICES. AND TODAY, OUR NUMBERS THAT WE ARE PROVIDING ARE NEARLY THE SAME. OVER 10,000 INDIVIDUALS LAST YEAR ALONE WERE HELPED BY UNITED BOARD OF MISSIONS. UNFORTUNATELY, WE DON'T HAVE THAT BASE THAT WE USED TO HAVE FROM CHURCHES, SO OUR GOAL THIS YEAR IS TO ACTUALLY DEVELOP A CHURCH COALITION IN OUR COMMUNITY TO HELP ALL OF OUR NEIGHBORS MUCH STRONGER THAN WHAT WE'RE ABLE TO DO WITH WHAT WE HAVE RIGHT NOW. THE MISSIONS ATTIC HAS REPLACED HAVING CLOTHING IN OUR HOUSES, AND THAT IS OUR RESALE STORE ON TWIN CITY HIGHWAY 3300, TWIN CITY HIGHWAY AND GROVES ACROSS FROM BURGER KING. AS EVERYBODY SAYS FOR THE LANDMARK, WE HAVE A BEAUTIFUL MURAL ON THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING. SO WHEN PEOPLE ARE IN NEED, THEY COME TO OUR OFFICES ON NINTH AVENUE AND WE GIVE THEM A VOUCHER AND THEY CAN GO TURN THAT VOUCHER IN WITHIN THREE DAYS AND PICK OUT SOME CLOTHING. AND THEN EVERY 3 TO 4 MONTHS THEY CAN COME BACK AND GET MORE CLOTHING FROM US. BY THAT METHOD, THE DONATIONS THAT COME INTO MISSIONS ATTIC ARE VARIOUS. THIS DRESS ACTUALLY CAME FROM MISSIONS ATTIC FOR $3, IF YOU CAN BELIEVE THAT EVERYBODY NEEDS TO SHOP AT MISSIONS ATTIC, IT DOES WELL FOR THE COMMUNITY AND YOUR POCKETBOOK AS WELL. NOT EVERYBODY CAN DRESS AS WELL AS MISS MOSES, BUT YOU KNOW, WE TRY. SO THE MISSIONS ATTIC ALSO DOES A LOT OF UNDERCOVER WORK FOR THE COMMUNITY. WHEN WE RECEIVE STUFFED ANIMALS THAT AREN'T SELLABLE OR USABLE, BUT FOR HUMANS. BUT THEY COULD BE FOR DOGS. WE GIVE THEM TO THE ANIMAL SHELTER ALSO. THAT GOES FOR THE LINENS, TOWELS, THAT TYPE OF THING FOR BEDDING FOR THEM. WHEN WE HAVE TO HAVE A WARMING CENTER, WHEN THE JUST RECENTLY WE SEND BLANKETS DOWN TO THE WARMING CENTER TO HELP WITH THAT AS WELL. WE ALSO SHARE SOME OF THE EXCESS CLOTHING THAT WE HAVE WITH THE HOSPITALITY CENTER ON GULF WAY.
THEY HAVE SUCH A SMALL SPACE. WE'RE KIND OF AN EXTRA HOLDING PATTERN FOR THEM, AND THEY SEND A VOLUNTEER EVERY COUPLE OF WEEKS TO REPLENISH THEIR STOCK THERE SO THAT WE CAN BE SURE AND HELP WITH OUR PROCEEDS THAT WE HAVE. OUR IN-HOUSE FOOD PANTRY IS VERY, VERY, VERY POPULAR THESE DAYS TO THE TUNE OF ALMOST 200 HOUSEHOLDS A MONTH THAT WE SERVE. THAT'S OVER 550 INDIVIDUALS. LAST YEAR, WE DISTRIBUTED 2200 HOUSEHOLDS WITH FOOD, 6000 PLUS INDIVIDUALS, 85,500 POUNDS OF FOOD IN ONE YEAR. WE ARE ALLOWED TO, WITH OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE, WITH THE PANTRY, WITH THE FOOD BANK TO BUY FOOD FOR OUR PANTRY ONCE EVERY EVERY MONTH. BUT THAT DOESN'T LAST VERY LONG. SO WE RELY ON FOOD DRIVES AND FUNDING THROUGH GRANTS AS WELL. SOME OF OUR CHURCHES RECENTLY, ONE ALLOWED US TO TO PARK OUR TRUCK ON ON THEIR PROPERTY FOR THEIR THREE SERVICES, AND THEY BROUGHT IN FOOD FOR US THERE.
ANOTHER ONE ALLOWED US TO BRING OUR TRUCK TO BRUCE'S, AND THEY PROVIDED A FOOD DRIVE THERE.
BUT AS YOU CAN SEE, FOOD GOES IN, BUT A LOT MORE GOES OUT. OUR BACK TO WORK PROGRAM IS ANOTHER LEAD OFF OF THE UNITED WAY PARTNERSHIP.
